Moremi Head Wrap

$22

The Moremi Head Wrap symbolizes strength and tenacity with its deep purple base. The dotted design over the purple background represents strategy and beauty, much like the Nigerian Queen Moremi.

Queen Moremi lived in the 12th century in the city and kingdom of Ile-Ife of Southwest Nigeria. She is a major figure in Yoruba history because she led her city to victory over the enemy kingdom. She was married to Oranmiyan, the heir to the king Ile-Ife and founding father of the Yoruba people, Oduduwa. The Ile-Ife kingdom was at war with an adjoining Ugbò tribe, who enslaved countless people of the Ife tribe. The Yoruba people of Ile Ife had no means of defending themselves and fell victim to the invading tribe. In order to save her people, Queen Moremi willingly surrendered to the invaders, got married to the enemy king, and seized the opportunity to discover the secrets of the group’s military strategy. She revealed that secret to the Ile-Ife people after she had managed to escape. She subsequently helped to devise a plan that led to Ile-Ife’s victory over the invaders.
